Virtual EBSD 2022
The EBSD 2022 annual UK-based meeting will be held in a virtual format. The Royal Microscopy Society (RMS) has selected this format to encourage participation from the global electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) community, support engagement from a wide range of participants, and reflect on the ongoing challenges related to the global COVID-19 pandemic. The two “half-day” meetings will encourage sharing the latest developments and applications of EBSD-related microscopy methods. In this virtual format, RMS will also encourage clusters of researchers to independently register for the meeting, but where reasonable to host cluster-viewing at their host institution.
Gatan and EDAX continue our corporate sponsorship of the annual EBSD meeting and all RMS events. We invite you to our live, 5-minute Techno Bites:
- EDAX: Advances of OIM Matrix and Dictionary Indexing, René de Kloe; 2:40 – 2:45 p.m. BST, 12 April 2022.
- Gatan: Broad ion beam tools for EBSD preparation, Steve Coyle; 4:30 – 4:35 p.m. BST, 12 April 2022.
Broad ion beam tools for EBSD preparation
Steve Coyle, Ph.D., Gatan, Inc.
As a surface-sensitive technique, sample preparation for EBSD requires special care to preserve sample integrity. In recent years, broad Argon ion beam tools have proven to be highly effective for a wide variety of samples, typically allowing for indexing a higher percentage of a given sample than other techniques. Compared to traditional mechanical polishing, ion beam preparation does not require special skills and yields reproducible results for any user. This talk will provide a review of typical broad ion beam techniques and results for EBSD and guidance for acquiring similar results.
